enda's teams in Senegal

Urban popular economy program (ECOPOP)

The Ecopop team was created in December 1990 to develop an alternative approach to urban development based on recruiting and utilising the potential in the popular urban economy and the marginalized social groups who make their living from it. Following the first phase which was concerned with experiments into different areas (water provision, the urban environment, managing a spontaneous habitat…), encouraging more in-depth research and raising interest about the concept of a popular urban economy, Enda-Ecopop has developed several programmes on a sub-regional scale in West Africa.

Energy programme

The work carried out by Enda's Energy Programme is centred around the use and development of energy in Africa. The programme uses the principles of research-action and training to help put into place the United Nations Conventions on Climate Change and Desertification in Africa and to develop alternative energy technology. Working in partnership by coordinating networks and jointly led projects is an important aspect of Enda Energy's work. The team is involved in collecting information on energy and implementing projects on a local as well as regional level.

Relay for urban participatory development (rup)

By developing methodological tools and technological innovations, Relay for participatory urban development (RUP) aims to help establish better administration in towns and villages to bring about an improvement in living conditions for disadvantaged communities. The majority of the RUP's activities consists in supporting the social production of basic goods and services in underprivileged urban and suburban areas and in developing a local micro-enterprise linked to the integrated management of the environment. The RUP also helps to improve the skills and capabilities of the people of the town (ordinary people and local authorities) and to promote more structure in town planning, as part of a common effort for town administration (Agendas 21). In addition it organises networks for exchanging thoughts and ideas and for collecting and distributing information.

Enda-Graf Sahel

ENDA GRAF SAHEL is an organisation which works with urban populations by adopting a Research-Action-Learning (RAL) approach. This method was chosen after learning from our own experiences and from the failure of development programmes in most African countries for the last 30 years. We have defined an approach in which, because of the research-action process, the people themselves are the real catalysts of change. Which is how over 30 programmes have been led since 1998 across the Sahel and West Africa.
